The latest exchange of mortars and heavy weapons fire comes just a few days after 6 Pakistani civilians were killed in Chaman by firing from "Afghan border forces". An emergency has been declared at Chaman DHQ hospital, and at least 11 injured persons were reportedly brought to the hospital as of the filing of this report. Injuries are also being reported on the Afghan side.

These incidents point to a deliberate aggressive posturing from the Afghan Taliban against Pakistan. The top Pakistani diplomat in Kabul, Ubaid Nizamani, barely escaped an assassination attempt on Friday 2 December; his guard received three gunshot wounds in the attack, which has been claimed by Islamic State (ISKP).

This is the second incident on the Chaman-Spin Boldak border during the month of December so far; in the last shelling and mortar fire incident, Pakistan is reported to have responded 'calibre-to-calibre' but casualties on the Afghan side remain unclear.

Today's engagement in Chaman-Spin Boldak also comes as US CENTCOM chief, General Michael E. Kurilla, is in Rawalpindi to meet Pakistan's army chief General Syed Asim Munir.
