Pakistani Twitterati on Tuesday questioned the Supreme Court suo motu of slain journalist Arshad Sharif’s Kenya killing.
One-time journalist Ubair Khan said everybody well knew who had orchestrated Sharif’s killing. No judge, he said, had the authority to hold them accountable. “LOL. People are celebrating Suo Moto by SC on Arshad Sharif Shaheed’s Killing, as if SC would actually investigate & find out those who conspired to kill Arshad. Matlab? We all know who they are and we all know that no judge in the country has the power to question them!”
Journalist Naimatullah Khan noted how the top court had “finally” taken a suo motu following the passage of 44 days since Sharif’s killing. “Forty-four days after his murder in Kenya, Supreme Court of Pakistan finally took suo moto notice of the murder of senior journalist #ArshadSharif, reads a press release that calls it a ‘brutal killing.'”
Striking a varying note, former special assistant to Punjab chief minister Hasaan Khawar said may change the course of history in Pakistan. “SCP’s suo moto notice of Arshad Sharif assasination can potentially change the course of history for Pak & will have bearing on freedom of speech, rule of law & other basic constructs of society. Hope it leads to formation of a full fledged commission & transparent investigation.”
Fatima, another Twitter user, however branded the development “well-calculated” given how all proofs had “vanished.” “A very well calculated Suo moto notice has been taken by the sleeping beauty when all the proofs have already been vanished. 👏#ArshadSharif”

Sharif, a popular journalist, was killed in Kenya on October 23. Local police billed his killing a case of ‘mistaken identity’ while social media was rife with accusations. Javeria, the wife of the deceased, separately reiterated calls for the family’s right to privacy be respected. Kenya media, separately, has not been buying the police version (of events). Kenya police, while earlier claiming the journalist was attacked after the vehicle he was travelling in failed to stop at a picket on Tuesday tweaked the version presented earlier. The force, in its latest stance, said Arshad had been killed in an exchange of fire.
