Indian Muslims on Tuesday marked December 6 as a “black day” on micro-blogging site Twitter in connection with the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid (mosque) in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh by crazed Hindu fanatics.

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi said December 6 will forever remain a black day for Indian democracy. The razing of the mosque, he said, was a symbol of injustice. Indian Muslims, he said, will never forget the incident and will ensure their future generations remain cognisant of it too.

“6th December will forever remain a Black Day for Indian democracy. The desecration and demolition of #BabriMasjid is a symbol of injustice. Those responsible for its destruction were never convicted. We will not forget it & we will ensure that future generations remember it too,” he said in his tweet.

Doctor Asma Zahera Tayeba said the destruction of the mosque will never be forgotten as she shared a photo pledging the mosque be rebuilt. “#babrimasjid We shall not forget. And We will remember this day.’Yaume Shahadat’.Masajid are centre markaz of Muslim community. Fall of Babri masjid and conditions of Muslims in last 30 yrs need introspection. Today is Yaume Ehtesaab also. We have to face Yaume Hashr…,” she said in her tweet.

The Indian American Muslim Council termed the mosque’s destruction the “darkest day” in the history of independent India. “December 6: The darkest day in the history of independent India. #BabriMasjid“

Journalist Meer Faisal plugged footage of one-time prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee “clearly” instructing Hindu zealots to raze the mosque. “Watch how Atal Bihari Vajpayee instigated the Hindu crowd a day before the Babri Masjid was demolished. He clearly indirectly told Hindu crowd to demolish the Babri Masjid. #BabriMasjid #hindutvaterrorism #Blackday.”

Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Rais Sheikh said the “martyrdom” of the mosque can never be forgotten. He also pointed attention towards how some people had been “celebrating” what was a “black day”. “The martyrdom of Babri Masjid can never be forgotten. Even today some people are celebrating this black day in the name of #ShauryaDiwas. So many lives were lost and many lives were destructed. #BabriMasjid (1/2)”

The Babri Masjid was razed by a crazed Hindu mob in 1992. The India Supreme Court awarded the site of the mosque to a Ram Temple in a unanimous 2019 verdict. A Ram Temple is being built at the site.
