Defence Minister First To Hint At Asim Munir's COAS Appointment
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had spilled the beans on the then impending COAS appointment in September.

His remarks have proven to be true in wake of developments today. Speaking to The Friday Times -- Naya Daur, he had said that Lieutenant General Asim Munir was a top contender for the top army post in an "off-the-record" comment. The federal minister had said Bajwa wanted to stay home following the completion of his tenure. The minister said PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari all wanted a new army chief appointed in November.

The Friday Times editor Najam Sethi, journalists Azaz Syed, Asad Ali Toor, Shahid Maitla and Nadia Naqi are some of the many who presented similar predictions after.

Munir, the senior-most of the six lieutenant generals to feature in a summary set to be sent to the prime minister for the military top post, is currently serving as Quarter Master General at the General Headquarters (GHQ). He was originally slated to retire in September, 2022.

Munir has previously served as Director-General (DG) Military Intelligence (MI), Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Corps Commander Gujranwala.
