Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday felicitated generals Asim Munir and Sahir Shamshad Mirza following their appointments as chief of army staff (COAS) and Joint Chief of Staff Committee respectively.
In a tweet, the prime minister extended his best wishes and congratulations to the two. “My congratulations and best wishes to the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee-designate Lt. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Chief of the Army Staff-designate Lt. General Asim Munir on their appointment.”
The prime minister expressed hope that the military will overcome security challenges confronting the nation in a fitting manner under Munir’s leadership in a meeting earlier. Sharif further expressed hope that the army will play a pivotal role in eradicating the menace of terrorism under him.
General Munir separately called on President Alvi at the Aiwan-e-Sadr too.
The general was named COAS by Sharif earlier on Thursday. He had long been cited as a prime contender for the top military post. The appointment came after weeks of hype. Alvi had approved a summary on the top army appointments later. He had met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan in connection with the appointments earlier the same day.
