The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is seeking a three-year jail term for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan , as well as an additional fine for ‘misleading officials’ regarding the state gifts he purchased from the Toshakhana when he was prime minister.
During a hearing of the ECP’s petition against Imran Khan regarding the Toshakhana case held today (Tuesday), an Islamabad districts and sessions court recorded the official statement of the electoral watchdog.
The hearing was presided by Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal, and District Election Commissioner Waqas Malik gave a statement before him.
Malik told the court that he had received authorization to pursue the case, and that the ECP was an independent institution that worked to fight against corrupt practices in politics.
PTI chief Imran Khan was expected to be present at the hearing today after a summons was issued for his appearance at the last hearing of the case. The former prime minister is currently in Lahore recovering from a gunshot wound after an attack on him at the PTI long march rally in Wazirabad in early November.
In late October, the ECP had disqualified Imran Khan after it found him guilty of concealing information about the sale of state gifts while he was prime minister. The ECP then sent the reference to court, demanding that criminal proceedings against Khan be taken.
