Want COAS Appointed On Merit, Imran Says
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday said he desired the next army chief be appointed on merit.

Khan made the comments in his address while addressing those present at the party's long march at Sargodha, Jhelum and Mardan. The PTI supremo said he feared the incoming army chief will be appointed to further the interests of the governing 'cabal of crooks'.

Citing the 'example' of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, he questioned why the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif would attack great significance to appointing an army chief on merit given how his assets were stashed abroad and his sons were British citizens. He said he feared damage to the institution following the naming of an army chief appointed sans merit.

Khan said the PTI had undertaken a long march to Islamabad to rid the nation of the cabal of crooks having been foisted on the nation. They, he said, had indulged in "economic genocide". The party, he said, was demanding free-and-fair general elections to remedy this. Their sole focus, Khan said, was on lining their profits, gathering ill-gotten wealth and then seeking pardons to secure their assets.

Commenting on the recent claims of a Dubai-businessman saying he had procured a Graff set gifted to Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman while the former was in office, the former prime minister said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jang Group had been running a propaganda campaign against him since his ouster. The "fugitive" presenting the claims, he said, was the latest in a string that included the Toshakhana reference and the prohibited funding case.
