'Army Chief Appointment Will Be Settled By November 22'
Maverick journalist Hamid Mir has said that the appointment of the next chief of army staff (COAS) will be concluded by November 21 or 22.

Mir made the comments in a Geo Pakistan broadcast aired on Wednesday. The Capital Talk host said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan's politics was premised on the issue. This held true for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari too.

This, he said, was the prime minister's legal and constitutional right. Premising politics on the singular issue was devoid of merit.

Mir said the issue would be settled by November 21 or 22 at the latest. He said a summary on the appointment was moved from the Defence Ministry to the PMO usually over the second or third week of November. "This is usually undertaken on November 18, 19 or 20. It should take one or two more days at maximum after."

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif does not err when it comes to appointing an army chief fit for the post, scholar Ayesha Siddiqa said on Monday.

She made the comments in flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay. The senior Sharif, Siddiqa said, erred much like former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Imran Khan by believing whoever was appointed will remain beholden.
