Federal Minister for Commerce and Investments Syed Naveed Qamar on Sunday was elected the president for the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) for a two-year term.
The elections took place in Bueno Aires, Argentina on Sunday, where Naveed Qamar won by an overwhleming 90% of the votes. 133 out of 140 elected members of the PGA voted for the federal minister to be the new president of the PGA.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader will hold a term of two years, and is the first Pakistani to be elected the president of the PGA.
The PGA is a non-profit, non-partisan international network of committed legislators, that informs and mobilizes parliamentarians in all regions of the world to advocate for human rights and the rule of law, democracy, human security, non-discrimination, gender equality, and climate justice.
Naveed Qamar joined the PGA in 1991, alongside former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and a few other PPP leaders. As per the APP, Naveed Qamar on being elected said that it was a 'great honour' for him to be elected president, and maintained that this was an outcome of the current government’s diplomatic efforts.
