Refusing to comment on the terrorism charges against former prime minister Imran Khan, the United States has said that this is a matter for the Pakistani legal system to decide as the US does not side with any one party over the other.
US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said during a press conference on Monday that while the country was 'of course' aware of the charges against the former prime minister, it was not a matter for the US to discuss and debate.
""It is not directly a matter for the United States, and that’s because we don’t have a position on one political candidate or party versus any other political candidate or party."
He said the terrorism charges were for the Pakistani legal and judicial system to decide and act upon.
Price added that the US supports the "peaceful upholding of democratic, constitutional, and legal principles in Pakistan and around the world".
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson and former prime minister Imran Khan was charged with terrorism over remarks he made during a speech on Saturday, which were deemed ‘threatening’.
The anti-terrorism case was filed against Imran Khan on Sunday night, regarding a speech he made on Saturday in which he threatened the Director General of Police as well as Additional Session Judge Zeba Chaudhry.
On Monday he approached the Islamabad High Court for pre-arrest bail, which was granted to him by the court till August 25.
