According to the police, the sanitary worker had been targeted because of a personal clash with a local resident. The Hindu worker has been identified as Ashok Kumar, and he was booked under section 295B over charges of blasphemy for allegedly desecrating the Quran.

Earlier in the day, a huge mob had assembled outside Kumar’s residence in Hyderabad’s Saddar area. They tried to break into his house. Subsequently, the police showed up in the evening and arrested Kumar.
The mob had grown in size by that time, and demanded that the police hand Kumar over to them. At this the police resorted to laathi charge and attempted to disperse the crowd away.
