PTI's Sibtain Khan Elected Punjab Assembly Speaker
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Sibtain Khan has been elected the Punjab Assembly speaker.

He secured 185 votes while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Malik Saif ul Malook Khokhar managed 175. Out of the 364 votes cast, four were rejected.

Panel of Chairman Wasim Badozai presided over the provincial assembly session. Following, Sibtain's victory, he administered oath to the speaker.

Earlier at 8pm, the voting was temporarily halted after Khokhar raised objections on the serial numbers on the ballot papers.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Raja Basharat congratulated Sibtain on his electoral victory. “Congratulations Janaab-e-Speaker Sibtain Khan,” he said, adding that “now they will proceed with the no-confidence motion against the deputy speaker".

PTI’s Shireen Mazari also congratulated the new speaker after the election. "Congratulations to PTI's Sardar Sibtain Khan on being elected Speaker Punjab Assembly. A great success for PTI and PML-Q led by Imran Khan. Another failure for imported government," she wrote in a tweet.

"It is hoped that Sibtain Khan will run the Punjab Assembly in a good manner," Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi said, adding that the opposition, like before, faced another defeat today.

The seat had fallen vacant following the election of Pervaiz Elahi as the chief minister of the province.
