Chaudhry Shujaat, Tariq Bashir Cheema Removed From PML-Q Party Positions
On the heels of then-party chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain penning a letter asking his party members not to vote for his cousin and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Parvez Elahi in the Punjab chief minister elections, the PML-Q central committee has decided to remove Shujaat as well as federal minister Tariq Cheema from their party positions.

In a meeting held by the PML-Q working central committee, it was unanimously decided that Chaudhry Shujaat's ill-health was affecting his sound decision-making, and that Tariq Cheema had been 'conspiring' against the party, as per a report by Dawn.

At the meeting, which was chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha, it was decided that fresh elections would be held for the top party posts within ten days. A five-member election commission was formulated with the party lawyers’ wing acting president, Jahangir A Jhoja acting as the election commissioner.

“Is there any justification left to keep Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as the party president and Tariq Bashir Cheema as secretary general?” Senator Agha asked, in reference to the matter of the letter penned by Chaudhry Shujaat against Parvez Elahi, adding that all limits had been crossed to damage the party. “If the letter episode can happen, this can happen too.”

He also said that the meeting had been called after two-thirds of the PML-Q had voiced concerns over Chaudhry Shujaat's ill-health. "The committee members had earlier asked the secretary general to call the CWC meeting and upon his refusal, I was asked to call it for being a senior member of the party,” he said.
