Terming the Supreme Court’s decision rejection Punjab deputy speaker’s ruling as the upholding of the ‘Constitutional supremacy’, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to observe ‘thanksgiving day’ today (Wednesday).

The Supreme Court in a ruling yesterday (Tuesday) declared Punjab Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari’s decision to appoint Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Hamza Shehbaz as Punjab chief minister ‘illegal‘. It then ordered the governor to administer the oath to Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Parvez Elahi before 11:30 pm last night.

Following the decision, PTI Chairperson and former prime minister Imran Khan appreciated the Supreme Court for ‘standing firm’ and ‘upholding the Constitution and the law’.

He also thanked the opposition allies’ lawyer, Barrister Ali Zafar, as well as the people of Punjab, for ‘coming out in unprecedented numbers in the by-elections’.

I appreciate our SC judges for standing firm & upholding the Constitution & law, against all manner of threats & abuse. I want to thank Barrister Ali Zafar & his team. I want to thank the people of Punjab for coming out in unprecedented numbers in bye elections against rigging.

— Imran Khan (@ImranKhanPTI) July 26, 2022

“Tomorrow evening we will offer thanks to Allah & celebrate with all the people of Pakistan who have stood by us in our campaign for Haqeeqi Azadi,” he said in another tweet.

Tomorrow evening we will offer thanks to Allah & celebrate with all the people of Pakistan who have stood by us in our campaign for Haqeeqi Azadi, coming out in massive numbers to show support. #ShukrAllahShukriyaAwam

Meanwhile, the PML-N leadership denounced the Supreme Court’s verdict, with the party’s supremo Nawaz Sharif saying that the SC had made the country into a theater.

پاکستان کو ایک تماشہ بنا دیا گیا ہے۔ تینوں جج صاحبان کو سلام

— Nawaz Sharif (@NawazSharifMNS) July 26, 2022

Shortly after the verdict was announced, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif tweeted ‘Judicial Coup’. Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman termed the decision ‘judicial murder’, and called a meeting to discuss it today (Wednesday).

JUDICIAL COUP.
