The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought arguments on a plea filed by the slain Noor Mukadam’s father seeking an increase in the sentences of the convicts and against acquittals of six other suspects in the murder case.
Earlier on February 24, a trial court in Islamabad had sentenced Zahir Jaffer, the prime suspect, to death, two of Zahir’s servants to ten years in prison each, and acquitted Zahir’s parents Zakir Jaffer and Asmat Adamjee.
A two-member bench of the IHC comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, while hearing the cases today, also issued notices to the Federation of Pakistan and the complainant on the petition of Zahir against his conviction.
Zahir’s lawyer told the court that they have filed an appeal for suspension of conviction. However, the court remarked that different appeals have been filed in the case, which it would see one by one, adding that the priority for the court is the appeal of Zahir.
Noor was found dead in Zahir’s house located in Islamabad’s Sector F-7/4 on July 20 last year. The incident had sparked public outrage and grabbed media attention.
The victim was the daughter of Shaukat Mukadam, Pakistan’s former ambassador to South Korea and Kazakhstan.
