The federal government is considering filing a treason case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan over the mayhem and rioting that took place during his party's long march last week.
Treason charges against the chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are also being considered, according to reports.
The decision to file treason cases against the PTI leaders was taken during a special cabinet meeting of key federal government members on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Minister for Communications Maulana Asad Mahmood, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Minister for Law Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, including Interior Secretary Yousuf Naseem Khokhar and Islamabad Police IG Nasir Akbar were also present.
The participants were apprised of the chaos that occurred during PTI's long march on May 25, by Sanaullah, Khokar and Akbar.
They deliberated whether to charge Khan, Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan, and Chief Minister GB Khalid Khursheed with treason charges.
The committee then postponed the meeting till June 6, in order to deliberate over the matter further. When the committee reconvenes, it will present its final recommendations before the federal cabinet.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah recommended to the committee that a treason case be filed against Imran.
