Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has earned widespread praise for his statement during a news conference in New York wherein he defended former PM Imran Khan over his visit to Russia.
While answering a journalist’s question during a press conference at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that Imran Khan could not have known that Russia would attack Ukraine the day he arrived in Moscow.
“As far the former prime minister’s trip to Russia, I would absolutely defend the former prime minister of Pakistan. He conducted that trip as part of his foreign policy and without knowing that. No one is psychic, no one has a sixth sense,” Bilawal said, in response to a journalist’s question.
The foreign minister added that there was no way Pakistan could have known that the invasion of Ukraine will begin at the same time as Imran’s visit. He went on to say that Pakistan should not be punished for ‘such an innocent action’.
The foreign minister further said that Pakistan was committed to the United Nations’ principles against use of force on the issue.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s statement defending Imran Khan pleasantly surprised social media users who noted that the foreign minister displayed exemplary maturity. Many also recalled how former PM Imran Khan used to criticise his opponents even during foreign visits.
