US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a maiden phone call to newly appointed Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and invited him to a food security meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on May 18.
The two-day conference at the UN will be chaired by Blinken, and will deal with the threat to global food security. Blinken also extended an invitation to Pakistan to attend the Second Global COVID Summit to be held virtually later this month.
According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Secretary Blinken congratulated Bilawal on his new appointment as foreign minister, and expressed his wish to continue strengthening the mutually beneficial Pakistan-US bilateral relationship.
“Received a call from Secretary Blinken. Grateful for warm felicitations on my assumption of office,” Bilawal tweeted after the call.

He also said the two exchanged views on strengthening mutually beneficial relationship, promotion of peace, development and security, and agreed engagement with mutual respect is the way forward.
Bilawal conveyed to the US foreign minister that Pakistan’s goals remained focused on human development, regional connectivity, and a peaceful neighborhood.
Blinken also tweeted about the conversation and remarked that on the 75th anniversary of Pak-US relations, the two countries remain committed to their cooperation on Afghan stability, combatting terrorism, and expanding commerce.

The two foreign ministers promised to remain in contact and enhance engagement on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The last contact between the foreign ministers of the two countries was in September 2021, when ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met Secretary Blinken during the UN General Assembly session in New York.
