PPP's Raja Pervez Ashraf Elected National Assembly Speaker Unopposed
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader and former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected the 22nd speaker of the National Assembly unopposed.

Ashraf was administered oath by Pakistan Muslim League - N (PML-N)'s Ayaz Sadiq, who was chairing the session initially. No one else had submitted nomination papers and Raja Pervez Ashraf was the lone candidate for the post.
The speaker seat fell vacant after former speaker and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser who stepped down from his posts minutes before voting on the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan last week.

Asad Qaiser announced his resignation after expressing his refusal to hold voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan. He said that he has seen the letter proving a 'foreign conspiracy' against the government and suggested that the no-trust motion was part of the same conspiracy.

"I have been an aide of Imran Khan for 30 years," he said, while refusing to hold the voting. He tendered his resignation while addressing the National Assembly, and asked PML-N's Ayaz Sadiq to assume the responsibility of the speaker.
