During the inaugural session of the Council of the Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) moot in Islamabad, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that one of the central pillars of Pakistan’s foreign policy is ‘promoting solidarity and cooperation within the Muslim Ummah’.

FM Qureshi further expressed ‘profound gratitude to the OIC General Secretariat for facilitating this important meeting’.

During his speech, the foreign minister also discussed Afghanistan, Palestine, Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK), and the effects of climate change.

On Afghanistan, he called for international support to help the Afghan Taliban eliminate Deash (IS-K), saying “We must guard against spoilers that wish to continue destabilizing Afghanistan and using its territory to promote terrorism.”

He called for the OIC to pass resolutions to alleviate the plights of Muslims in Palestine and IOJK.

“It is incumbent to resolve these challenges by partnering with the international community as well. Beyond adopting resolutions, we must take concrete and tangible steps towards permanent solutions,” he said.

The foreign minister also called on the international community to support mitigation efforts to counter the devastating effects of climate change in developing countries.

Islamabad has been steadily preparing for this year’s OIC meeting, renovating the National Assembly and urging political parties not to hold partisan rallies on the days the foreign dignitaries will arrive.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) agreed to postpone its rally ahead of the no-confidence vote against the prime minister, with PDM chief Maulana Fazul Rehman saying, “We have great respect for Muslim countries and do not want to create any problems for the foreign dignitaries.”
