Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and the Sukkur Municipal Corporation have announced the start of the ‘Clean and Green Sukkur’ campaign at an environmental rally in the city, calling on all residents to do their part to protect the city’s environment.

On Friday, the rally was held at the Globe Chowk Lab-e-Mehran under the leadership of Special Assistant to CM Sindh Barrister Arsalan Islam Shaikh, Commissioner Sukkur Ghulam Mustafa Phul, Deputy Commissioner Sukkur Javed Ahmed and Administrator Sukkur Ali Raza Ansari.  The rally aimed to create awareness and ensure participation of all residents of Sukkur to keep the city ‘clean and green’.

Participants included religious scholars; officials from government and non-government organizations, including the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Sukkur, Sukkur High Court Association, Sukkur IBA University; civil society; as well as teachers and students. Participants held banners and placards with slogans such as, “Go green to breathe clean”, “Say No to Pollution”, “Mera Kachra, Meri Zimedari“, “Go Eco Friendly”, “Clean & green is Our Dream”, “Treat the Earth Well” and others.

Addressing the rally, former Mayor Sukkur Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh said that it was the duty of every citizen, including district administration, to keep Sukkur clean and tidy. He called for his former constituency to keep the city clean as part of ‘our national and religious duty’, including simple acts like dumping garbage in its designated place. The former mayor added that the government and the public must work together. He appealed to citizens and leaders to plant as many trees as possible to provide a clean and pleasant environment.

Deputy Commissioner Sukkur Javed Ahmed also addressed the crowd, saying that cleanliness is a function of faith and social duty.  He said everyone had the responsibility to keep their houses, streets, neighbourhoods and city clean. He appealed to residents to cooperate with district administration and representatives of other relevant agencies, including the municipal corporation and the cleaning staff, to make the city clean and green.

In his speech, Administrator Ali Raza Ansari said that the whole staff of Sukkur Municipal Corporation and the officers assigned to clean the city were present at the rally, and asked participants to extend to them their full cooperation and thanks.
