Protesting Inflation With A Chanel Bag: Hina Parvez Butt Under Fire On Social Media

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) politician Hina Parvez Butt attracted backlash on social media after she posted a photograph of herself attending a protest outside the parliament against rising inflation while wearing luxury fashion goods.

Butt posted the photograph on Twitter and social media users were quick to notice her pearls, Manolo Blahnik heels, and a Chanel purse.

These luxury items were contrasted with a pot, carrot and wooden spoon which Butt was holding to protest food inflation.

Her caption stated, “Outside the Punjab Assembly protesting against rising costs.”

The optics of this protest offended many social media users. Some pointed out the cost of Butt’s accessories and compared it with the minimum wage in Pakistan.

“If I’m not mistaken, your gorgeous bag is Chanel Medium Flap, $6,800. Manolo Blahnik, Hangisi pumps I presume, worth $1,525. I don't know much about pearls.

The perfect accessories to protest inflation, only in Pakistan. Leaders in other countries stick to retail in a protest,” wrote Mehr Tarar.

“Expensive pearls necklace, branded handbag and designer’s dress and she is agitating against inflation, height of hypocrisy. All the stuff she is wearing and carrying would be more than enough for a poor family to survive a year,” wrote another social media user.
