Before hsi death, he was being held at the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) at Bhuj in Kutch district of the Gujarat state.

Indian authorities informed the Pakistan High Commission that they held 340 Pakistani prisoners, including 263 civilians and 77 fishermen. Meanwhile, Pakistan handed over a list of 319 Indian prisoners including 49 civilians and 270 fishermen who were in its custody at that point in time.
