Before the elections, every political party (except PTI), every foreign newspaper and every independent journalist had concluded that The Aliens, Khalai Makhluk, Agriculture Department, Miltablishment, Whatever, had conclusively pre-rigged the elections in an unprecedented manner. A day after the elections, every political party (except PTI), every foreign newspaper and every independent journalist has confirmed the finding. Before the elections, the Miltablishment, Supreme Court and Media were on trial. After the elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan has joined them in the dock.

The ECP claims that “the Remote Transmission System (RTS) broke down, hence the announcement of results was delayed by a few hours.” Was the RTS deliberately glitched because the Agriculture Department panicked when the opposition began to weigh in and something had to be done to get things back on track? Even if it was an unforeseen breakdown, this does not explain why the polling agents were kicked out while the votes were being tabulated or why such lengthy delays ensued.

In the next year or so, we should expect scores of petitions to be filed wherever the margin of PTI’s victory is less than 10,000 or thereabouts. Thousands of bags will be opened and hundreds of thousands of ballots recounted and thumbprints matched. Thousands of Form 45 will be scrutinized. But none of this huffing and puffing will bring Imran Khan’s house down because he is protected and propped up by the Miltablishment.

Imran Khan will be Prime Minister, he will choose the next President of Pakistan and the PTI will rule in Islamabad, KP and possibly even in Punjab while mounting stiff opposition to the PPP in Sindh. Why was such a sweeping victory required of it? What should we expect in the new Pakistan?

To be fair, Imran Khan cannot be denied his fair share of the voter, especially among the new youth, urbanising white-collar middle-class and rich. His prospects became brighter after he started to enroll “electables” regardless of the colour of their money or character. Equally, the PMLN, whatever its self-righteous claims or principles, was well and truly on a suicidal path. But electoral engineering on such a large scale was still necessary to provide legitimacy for a constitutional and political overhaul. What’s on the cards?

A State of Emergency could be imposed under the garb of financial necessity pinned to the alleged misdeeds of the previous regimes. The numbers in parliament will not be too difficult to get. Such an Emergency would restrict fundamental rights and pave the way for a witch hunt of political and media opponents in order to satisfy the bloodlust of the winners (IK has said he won’t do that), protect them from any potential buffeting by a disgruntled opposition and detract criticism from unpopular policy decisions or incompetent and corrupt mismanagement. If that happens, we should expect NAB, FIA, FBR and IB to get hyper active after all state institutions are brought on the same page.

The constitution may also be targeted for amendment. The 18th Amendment, for starters, has become irksome because it shaves the federal pool — which is required to pay for increasing defense expenditures and pensions— by devolving financial resources to the provinces. A need may also be felt to reduce the size and strength of Punjab in the scheme of things, especially since the development of a critical fissure in the historical pro-Miltablishment character of the province. Plans remain on the anvil to carve it up into three or more “units” that are politically more “manageable”.

But the “new dream team” that is lining up to run the “new Pakistan” will not find it easy going. The economy needs more than a shot in the arm. Hard times are upon us and the very middle-classes and rich that have catapulted Imran Khan to office will have to pay the price of their convictions. The value of their rupee is going to fall, so their everyday needs will become expensive; they will have to pay more indirect taxes and duties; and IMF structural reforms will dampen infrastructural growth and employment. This will give grist to the opposition, media and judiciary to stand up and create hurdles in his path.

Admittedly, the Miltablishment has stitched up an extraordinary political dispensation in difficult times. But, unlike Nawaz, the person they have chosen to lead it is strong-willed and unpredictable. In fact, Nawaz was eminently pliant. Yet, after a while, he felt compelled, given the nature of power, to try and be his own man. But this was unacceptable and he had to pay the price for even thinking such rash thoughts. Imran Khan, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish. He may have embraced the Miltablishment as a tactical move but sooner rather than later he will begin to challenge the conventional wisdom of the national security state handed down to him. That’s when all bets will be off.

Meanwhile, let us not spoil their honeymoon with grudging digs and pin pricks.

I hope what u predicts comes wrong …

  2. Saeed M Anjum says:

    Sir you are absolutely right

  3. SharifL says:

Slightly blunt but to the point. I may add that the victory was organised so that PTI does not have an absolute majority and made sure that It does not need the ‘help’ pf PPP to form the government. IK praises ZAB, but does not explain how this ‘strong’ leader was hanged.
This naya Pakistan may have less corruption. but it will be a very conservative one with blasphemy laws and less rights for women and close relationship with Taliban. On the other hand, i am glad that the empire of NS has been ‘clean bowled’. But Pakistan which will carry on with trial and error regardless.

    • SharifL says:

I forgot to mention one other bad action of NS. He jailed Najam Sethi for telling the truth. It is great that Najam sahib does not talk about it in his editorials.

  4. Khalid Parvez says:

After independence Pakista has entered a second phase after 7o years. This is next generation Pakistan, G-2

I hope the huge difference between Rich and Poor will decrease.

All matters will be decided on Merit.

    Corruption will decrease.

    Criminals will be awarded punishment.

  5. Dr. Sahib says:

The “swamp” will drain the miltablishment Khan-sama the moment he opposes wars that the mercinary force of the imperialists is commissioned to undertake as it did in the past on behalf of America. In Pakistan sanctity of institutions means, making them available for sale to foreign interests in the name of “patriotism”. The people and economy of Pakistan, and both are intimately linked, are collateral damage in such wars even as the sanctimonious make a windfall supplemented by extra payouts from taxpayers whose taxes Khan has promised to protect without mentioning those that make the biggest illegitimate raids on them.

I give 6 months to new government before people become wary of them and then usual hue and cry on the evening talk shows.

  7. Akram says:

Any incumbent govt would have faced the same financial troubles as the PTI govt. Nothing new there. Also, can you explain why khalai makhlooq was unable to make PTI win more seats in Lahore?

  8. Sabi says:

Why Nawaz Sharif asked his voters to come out in great number for poling even though it was known that decisions were alread made. There are two reasons if not more. First to show his street power and second which is very clever move is to let pmln voter see with his own eyes the ‘hospitality’ of khalimahlooq.
Tha means he has – struck the nail aright.
Strike with your all your might boy while the iron is red scene is not very far!

  9. Zaheer Abbas says:

Sir! I agree it might be a challenging one for Miltablishment for their conventional policies but if IK change the policies it definitily political and democratic win for which we as a nation searching since independence…
    Hope for best…

    Mr. sethi,

I am quite sure, you shall not serve as a PCB chief anymore. Please come back to Aapas ki Baat. We miss your expert analysis. In this upcoming Imran khan era, we will need to know some home truths and I believe the current fourth pillar of this so-called democracy is bound to fall in line or at the times, toe the miltablishment line if not more.
    Consider.

Very well written and if I may mention about a cartoon published in one of London newspaper, explains lot of things. July 2018 selection /election? has brought back democracy to square one mean July 1977. Let’s pray and hope for the better and prepare for the worst.

    Sethi,
Rise of Karachi Stock Exchange and depreciation of dollar are far better indicators on election results than any pundits’ opinion.

  15. Aneesa Shaikh says:

The opposition should come up with concrete evidence about the so-called rigging. Mere allegations are no longer the solution to their unjustifiable pain.

  16. Ayesha says:

I am not a PTI supporter, but I am hoping and praying that Imran Khan becomes the first Pakistani PM to complete a 5-year term. All previous PM have been dismissed on trumped-up charges of corruption/contempt of court and in the end it is the country that suffers. No-one is Sadiq/Ameen in this country.

    • Dr. Sahib says:

The Khalai Makhlook will not let any civilian premier last in office no matter how well he polishes their boots and Khan has done some wonderful boot polishing, that is because without continuity and stability institutions cannot develop and we’re civilian institutions to develop, the Khalai Makhlook would lose its power. The real assault on national institutions of executive, Parliament and judiciary has come from the Khalai Makhlook when it has violated the Constitution, sent premiers home or to heaven and used the judiciary for it’s shenanigans. The Khalai Makhlook, they are the real traitors.

Why our politicians are not so cruel and cunning, and strategist to beat establishment. Why they compromise on there shortcomings and get blackmailed by the establishment. If they want to lead the community and really want to become a leader they must have to admit ok “ yes I did this this and that in past Appologise to it openly and restarts a new era. The other option ok sits behind the scen and introduce new faces and prepare them for the future.

  20. Sabi says:

    MR Sethi
You are a man of integrity and we all know the attitude this selected Khan had towards you. We wouldn’t like you working under him.
Leave pcb post unless he request you to wort for pcb.

  21. Naeem Sharif says:

Sethi Sahib you are quite right in predicting that NAB will become hyperactive. They have already started against you.
Please remember the Khalai Makhlooq is very intelligent. The anaylists e.g. Kamran Khan and others are saying IF the Khalai Makhlooq was in action then how come
    1) Rana Sanaullah and the others who won by small margins
    2) Why PSP lost
    3) Why BAP could not win seats
    4) Why the Abu Jeep lost
The aim of Khalai Makhlooq was to install the Imran Khan in power in a manner that will not reflect on them. The above mentioned were Pawns in the game and they can be sacrificed.
They had to close the gates when they saw the opposition come out in large numbers to defeat them.
Khalai Makhlooq – Murdabad for stealing the election…

  22. Sabi says:

My fears are based on solid grounds. My biggest fear is destruction of mega projects in coming years if this government is sustained.
Under construction motorway projects will slow down and already completed highways will suffer much. The money for maintenance of infrastructure will go into their pockets and we will have a dilapidated roads. This is the area where they see very big scope for making fortunes. That is the reason they have not mentioned development of infrastructure in their future plan. Clean drinking water education or poverty line kind of dramas they know they can fool people with data manipulation. They know who will go to Balochistan or other far flung areas to to confirm their claims. Punjab will look like ugly land .

  23. Ahmed Saeed says:

Let’s hope for a better and prosperous Pakistan. Mr Sethi please use your energies in a positive way.
Nawaz Sharif has lost and accept it. Molana Fazal is behaving like a spoiled kid and we know his intentions. He cannot digest defeat and so is the case with others who are going to lose the perks and shall now be hold accounable.

  24. Dr. Sahib says:

Even though no corruption was proven against Nawaz (and it was a clear case of political vitimizstion by a historically corrupt judiciary that apparently has no clue that those of means either inherit their wealth or use preexisting wealth for income and not income for wealth- hence possessing assets beyond income and that the 1990s are far removed from 2017), corruption of wasting billions is proven against the ECP, given their current performance of blatant rigging to help Khan-sama of GHQ. Nawaz was innocent because he wasn’t proven guilty.

  25. adil zareef says:

Najam sb only you have the vision and grasp of matters which expresses our thoughts so well

  26. Iftikhar says:

CPEC is going to be a much bigger loser than PMLN. China might start applying brakes on several ongoing CPEC projects due to the lack of interest in anything China by HMH (His Miltablishment Highness) Imran Khan. China ans Saudi Arabia are most important countries, when it comes to financial help for repayment of loans under duress financial circumstance. Other option would be following IMF dictat requiring more duties, stricter taxation and hard loans. The dollar-rupee exchange rate would be a good indicator to gauge PTI government performance over next 2 years.
