PM Nehru at Pakistan High Commission, New Delhi (1958)
The photo shows Ruhafza Hyder, wife of Deputy High Commissioner (and future High Commissioner to India) Sajjad Hyder, conversing with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at a reception held at the Pakistan Residence.

In between the central figures is the sister of a staff member from (then) East Pakistan. The full strength of the Mission community, residing mostly inside the newly built and still striking Chancery premises, numbered up to 3,000.

Ruhafza Hyder founded the Pakistan High Commission School for the large number of children there. Being highly literate and a writer, with friends from her Lahore College days throughout Delhi/India, she was also as a diplomat’s wife the perfect complement to her capable husband.
