John and Jaqueline Kennedy (1953)
On September 12, 1953, long before John F Kennedy made headlines as a US president, he and Jaqueline were in national newspapers that ran pictures of their glamorous wedding.

LIFE magazine – which had run their photograph on a date in Cape Cod on its July 1953 cover – sent their 20-something photographer Lisa Larsen to photograph the event. This picture shows how she was able to tell an intimate story of the wedding.

“Bride and bridegroom finally sit down to lunch after the long, wearying ordeal of the receiving line,” the original caption says. “Jacqueline, whose wedding dress contained 50 yards of material, adjusts veil while her senator husband starts right in on fruit cup.”

Apart from hundreds of senators, celebrities and diplomats invited to the wedding, more than 2,000 fans of the couple were outside the St Mary’s church in Newport, Rhode Island to wish them a happy life.
