Sirajul Haq and the 70-year-old youth


Reported in Express (January 18, 2016) when Jamaat-e-Islami emir Sirajul Haq was addressing a gathering at the party’s ‘youth festival’, a 70-year-old man stood up and interrupted him, asking his leader to find him a bride. Sirajul Haq said he should help the young people at the festival get married first. The man told reporters his wife had passed away six months ago. If politicians and bureaucrats can marry twice, why can’t I?

Blind rage


According to Nawa-e-Waqt (January 18, 2016) a politician who was angry after losing the local council elections in a Pindi Bhattian suburb persuaded a blind man to accuse his rival of gouging his eyes out. The suspect is on a bail.

Woman’s electricity bill is Rs 11 crore


Dunya reports (January 19, 2016) a woman in Karachi was sent an electricity bill of Rs 110 million. It says she used 7,000 units.

‘Mind your own business, Obama!’


Quoted in Express (January 19, 2016) PTI leader Asad Umar says Obama cannot manage (sambhala nahee ja raha) his own country, but is worried (fikr khaye ja rahee hai) about Pakistan 10,000 miles away. He should mind his own business (kaam say kaam rakhain).

According to Dunya (January 20, 2016) despite a ban, YouTube was the fourth most visited website in Pakistan last year.

Karachi to Lahore in more than a day


Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (January 20, 2016) a PIA flight took more than a day to get from Karachi to Islamabad instead of the scheduled two hours. It left Karachi 10am on a Monday, and reached the capital at 5pm on Tuesday. Two hundred passengers suffered (rul gaye), one had an epileptic seizure and another one had an attack of asthma.

Hurt hockey player goes to hospital on referee’s motorbike


According to Express (January 21, 2016) when the hockey player Umar Bhutta injured his ankle during practice at the national camp for South Asian Games, there was no ambulance. A referee took him to the hospital on his own motorcycle. Pakistan won the title earlier this month.

Trash or treasure?


A cleric at the historic Shahjahan mosque in Thattha has alleged that the original tiles at the mosque’s doors were removed for repair but put on the door of the National Museum in Karachi, Nawa-e-Waqt reports (January 22, 2016). An engineer at the Culture Department says the tiles were found in trash (kachray main parray thay) outside the mosque. They were not taken forcibly.

Ishaq Dar forgets passport at Lahore airport


Jang says (January 23, 2016) Finance Minister Ishaq Dar forgot his passport on a table at the Lahore airport VIP lounge and went to Islamabad by a helicopter. It cost Rs 20,000 to send the passport to Islamabad in a taxi, and he gave Rs 10,000 in reward to the staff who found it.

‘Imran Khan is old enough to be my father’


Quoted in Dunya (January 24, 2016) Meera says Imran Khan is old enough to be her father, and marrying him is out of question. The age difference is very large (zameen asmaan ka farak). If the PTI chief proposes, she will decline.
