Hospital chief sacked for watching nurses dance


Reported in Dunya (October 16, 2015) the medical superintendent at Sir Ganga Ram hospital in Lahore was sacked for watching nurses dance at a party in their hostel. A senior nurse did not like it and videotaped the event, in which he was seen clapping to the music while other senior nurses danced.

Indian president likes ‘Hamas’


Quoted in Express (October 17, 2015) Indian president Pranab Mukherjee surprised his Israeli hosts (hairat ka jhatka) when he said ‘I love Hamas’. He clarified that he intended to say ‘I love Hummus’.

Angry wife chases cop away from court 


According to Jang (October 17, 2015) the first wife of a police sub inspector attacked him when he arrived at a court hearing in the alimony case, forcing him to run away (dorr laga dee). When senior police officers were informed, they assured the woman they will make the cop pay her an allowance.

Women barred from voting in Imran Khan hometown 


Dunya reports (October 18, 2015) a jirga banned women from voting in the local council elections in Imran Khan’s native constituency in the Paikhel area of Mianwali. They were also forbidden from leaving their houses on the election day.

Electricity bill more than the price of the house


A laborer in Peshawar was sent an electricity bill that amounted to more than the price of his house, reports Nawa-e-Waqt (October 18, 2015). The house did not have an air conditioner or a room cooler, only three fans, but it was asked to pay Rs 450,000.

Former boxing champion sells donkeys


According to Nawa-e-Waqt (October 19, 2015) former national boxing champion Shah Jahan has been forced by poverty to sell donkeys for a living in Liari. He was Pakistan’s national champion from 1999 to 2004.

Extortion probe committee spent Rs 8 million 


Dunya reports (October 20, 2015) a three-member committee tasked to investigate whether money gathered by extortion in Karachi was being used in terrorism spent Rs 8 million in 15 days. The bill includes administrative expenses. According to the newspaper, they were not able to reach a conclusion in their report.

1,600-km illegal gas network found


Reported in Express (October 20, 2015) a 1,600-km long illegal natural gas supply was caught in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It had more than 24,500 illegal connections, including industrial and commercial connections, which have been cut off.

Chinese workers climb a pole over unpaid salaries


Reported in Jang (October 21, 2015) three Chinese men working on the coal power project in Sahiwal climbed a pole in protest after they weren’t given salaries for three months. They came down when they were convinced their salaries will be paid.

Islamabad airport 9th worst in the world 


According to Nawa-e-Waqt (October 22, 2015) Islamabad airport has reached number 9 on the list of worst airports in the world. A Nigerian airport tops the list, followed by airports in Jeddah, Katmandu, Tashkent, and Kabul.
