Pakistani president Ayub Khan samples barbecue food during a picnic at Johnson City during his US visit in 1961, as US vice president Lyndon B Johnson looks on. This was Ayub Khan's first state visit to the US, where he was received by president John F Kennedy himself. A confetti parade welcomed him in New York.

It was a celebration of the arrival of a staunch ally from troubled Asia at the height of the Cold War, the man who had proclaimed to the Americans, “Our Army can be your Army”.

Pictures and videos of the warm welcome that Ayub Khan received during this visit are still shared as examples of a lost dignity.
