Civil Hospital Karachi (1910)

Civil Hospital Karachi (1910)
A rare photograph of Karachi's Civil Hospital taken around 1910, a little more than a decade after it was founded following a third outbreak of bubonic plague in India.

The hospital proved a great asset as hundreds of thousands of refugees arrived from India after Partition to what was then Pakistan's capital city.

In a 1961 entry in the visitors' log, US President Lyndon Johnson's wife wrote: "This has been a visit both heart-breaking and rewarding. My hat is off to you women doctors!"

The building has been declared a heritage and protected by the Department of Culture.
