Reported in Express (June 5, 2014), the number of followers of famous religious scholar Dr Tahirul Qadri’s Facebook page has crossed two million, according to his party Pakistan Awami Tehrik. They say he is the most discussed scholar on social media.

Consumer court violating civil rights?

Reported in Jang (June 6, 2014), a man created a scene at the Consumer Court in Lahore, throwing around their furniture and threatening them, complaining about the cars and motorcycles parked outside the building. After being arrested, he told the police he did not know it was a court, and thought it was a travel agent’s office. He lived in an adjacent residential building and said the cars parked outside the Consumer Court blocked its entrance.

Legal battle becomes physical fight

Reported in Express (June 6, 2014), two lawyers began to fight during the hearing of an abduction case at a court in Lahore. One of them ended up with broken arm. They have both filed complaints against each other in the nearby police station.

Ahmed Shehzad fined for using cellphone while driving

Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (June 7, 2014) cricketer Ahmed Shahzad was fined Rs 500 for talking on his mobile phone while driving, in Gulberg area of Lahore.

Sania Mirza has jinxed Shoaib Malik

According to Dunya (June 7, 2014), marrying Indian tennis player Sania Mirza has been unlucky for Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. Since his wedding, he has only scored 487 runs in 33 matches, and taken just two wickets. He was not considered for a central contract with the PCB, and is unlikely to make a comeback in Pakistan cricket team.

Cannibal tries to abduct girl

According to Nawa-e-Waqt (June 8, 2014), an alleged cannibal (Adamkhor) tried to abduct a six year old girl in Islamabad. When the people of the neighborhood heard her cries, they came out of their houses shouting ‘Adamkhor! Adamkhor!’ The cannibal left the girl and ran away.

Two year old accused of extortion

Reported in Dunya (June 8, 2014), Sukkur police has registered a case against a two year old boy for extortion, seeking a trial under terrorism laws, among others.

12 girls of 473 pass fitness test for Railway police

Only 12 of the 473 women applicants for jobs in Railway Police passed the physical test on the second day, reports Express (June 9, 2014). Most of them were exhausted by a run (nidhal ho gaeen), and one of them fell unconscious as soon as she finished the race.

Pakistan forgot US must pay for use of airspace

Reported in Dunya (June 9, 2014), Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority has sent the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan a bill of Rs 200 million for using Pakistani airspace. The authority has realized 13 years after the war in Afghanistan began that the ISAF forces do not pay Pakistan to use its air space.

An unorthodox bailout

Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (June 10, 2014), lawyers slapped and punched a policeman to free their client after he was denied bail in a case in Lahore High Court. Other policemen watched silently (khamosh tamashai). The accused ran away in handcuffs.

Police officer beats up traffic warden

Reported in Jang (June 11, 2014), when a traffic warden stopped a police officer’s driver from parking his car outside the Lahore High Court mosque, he lost his temper (taish main aa gaye), and beat up and injured the warden (maar maar kar lahu lahaan kar diya). He also tore his shirt off. The officer, a station house officer, is pressuring the traffic warden for reconciliation.

Shireen Mazari called ‘aunty’ in Parliament

According to Jang (June 11, 2014), when PTI leader Shireen Mazari pointed out a lack of quorum during the budget session, she had an argument with PML-N member Umar Ayub (talkh jumlon ka tabadla) and women legislators from the PML-N chanted ‘Aunty Sit Down’.
