Mian Barkat Ali Khan (1907- 1963) was born in Kasur in present-day Pakistan. He was the son of Ustad Ali Bux Kasuri and the younger brother of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Trained by his father in Hindustani classical music, Ustad Barkat Ali was especially adept at singing lighter forms such as thumri, dadra and ghazal. His style of singing Raag Pahadi became so popular that it influenced a whole generation of thumri and ghazal singers, including Farida Khanum and Ghulam Ali. He is also regarded as one of the last followers of the classical style of ghazal singing.
Here, he’s rendering Jigar Muradabadi’s ghazal at a private mehfil.
