Mehdi Hassan (July 18, 1927- June 13, 2012) was born in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India into a family of traditional musicians. He claimed to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant clan of musicians and received his musical grounding from his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were both traditional Dhrupad singers. After partition they migrated to Pakistan and suffered several financial hardships till Hassan was given an opportunity to sing at Radio Pakistan, Lahore in 1957. Due to his passion for Urdu poetry he started experimenting with ghazal singing and gave it a new direction, setting the form free from the clutches of its purely classical antecedents.
