Muhammad Shareef Khan ‘Poonchwaley’ (1923-1980) was born in Poonch State into a family of renowned veena and sitar players. As a child he learned music from his father Ustad Abdul Rahim Khan and his uncle Ustad Madan Khan. His distinctive style of exposing the characteristic of a raag while keeping its ‘shudhata’ raised him to a position which could be achieved by very few sitar exponents of the subcontinent.

This is a recording of Raag Kafi performed by Ustad Sharif Khan Poonchwaley.

Track: Raag Kafi
