Portrait of a dancer (1921)

This portrait of a dancer in Lahore's Moti Bazaar was taken by Maynard Owen Williams for the National Geographic in November 1921. The dancer is standing in the doorway looking at the camera, wearing Shalwar Kameez and a vest with loud traditional jewelry.

The original caption to the picture was "A priestess of dance in the Moti Bazaar: Lahore". It was part of the cover story titled "Through the Heart of Hindustan".

Located inside Taksali gate, it is one of the oldest bazaars of Lahore. Once known for its dancers, the bazaar is now famous for cheap traditional footwear.
